South Africa Population

According to Statistics South Africa, there were 38.8 million adults aged 18 years and older in South Africa in 2022. This represents 62.6% of the total population. The adult population is projected to grow to 41.4 million by 2030.

The adult population is unevenly distributed across South Africa. The provinces with the largest adult populations are Gauteng (11.2 million), KwaZulu-Natal (9.1 million), and Western Cape (5.9 million). These provinces account for over two-thirds of the total adult population.

The adult population is also becoming increasingly urbanized. In 2022, 73.3% of adults lived in urban areas, up from 68.0% in 2011. This trend is expected to continue in the coming years.

The adult population in South Africa is diverse in terms of race, ethnicity, and language. The majority of adults (79.3%) are black, followed by white (9.1%), coloured (8.4%), and Indian (2.5%). The most common languages spoken by adults are Zulu (23.7%), Xhosa (16.1%), Afrikaans (15.9%), and English (9.6%).
