A concise English grammar

Here's a quick and dirty guide to essential English grammar:

Parts of Speech:

  • Nouns: Things, people, places (book, person, park).
  • Verbs: Actions or states of being (read, is).
  • Adjectives: Describe nouns (big, happy).
  • Adverbs: Describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs (quickly, very, quite).
  • Pronouns: Replace nouns (she, we, it).
  • Conjunctions: Connect words or clauses (and, but, because).
  • Interjections: Express emotions (wow, ouch, hello).

Sentence Structure:

  • Subject + Verb + (Object): Basic sentence pattern (I eat pizza).
  • Independent Clauses: Stand alone sentences (It rained.).
  • Dependent Clauses: Need an independent clause (Though it rained, I had fun.).

Punctuation:

  • Period: Ends a sentence (. ).
  • Comma: Separates clauses or lists (I like apples, oranges, and grapes.).
  • Question Mark: Ends a question (What's your name?).
  • Exclamation Point: Shows strong emotion (Wow!).

Common mistakes:

  • Subject-verb agreement (Singular subject needs singular verb: The cat eats food).
  • Possessive vs. plural (Apostrophe for possession or plurals: cat's vs. cats).
  • Tense consistency (Stay consistent with past, present, future tenses).

Remember:

  • Practice makes perfect! Read, write, and speak regularly.
  • Resources are abundant! Dictionaries, grammar guides, online tools are your friends.
  • Ask for help! Don't hesitate to clarify doubts with teachers, friends, or even AI like me.
