Subject: (who or what is doing the action)

  • The cat (subject) purred loudly.

Adverb: (modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb)

  • The cat purred loudly (adverb).

Verb: (action or state of being)

  • The cat purred (verb) loudly.

Adjective: (describes a noun or pronoun)

  • The fluffy (adjective) cat purred loudly.

Object: (receives the action of the verb)

  • The cat purred a contented purr (object).

Complement: (completes the meaning of the sentence)

  • The cat purred a contented purr (complement).

Conjunction: (joins words, phrases, or clauses)

  • The cat purred loudly and (conjunction) wagged its tail.

Transition: (connects ideas or sentences)

  • In addition (transition), the cat purred loudly and wagged its tail.

Signpost: (indicates the organization of the text)

  • First (signpost), the cat purred loudly.

Example Sentence:
