 What is a Verb?

A verb is a word that expresses an action, event, or state of being. It's the heart of a sentence, telling us what's happening.

Types of Verbs

There are many types of verbs, but here are the main ones:

  1. Action Verbs: These verbs express physical or mental actions.

    • Example: run, jump, think, eat
  2. Linking Verbs: These verbs connect a subject to a noun or adjective that renames or describes the subject.

    • Example: is, are, was, were, seems, becomes
  3. Helping Verbs: These verbs help the main verb express tense, mood, or voice.

    • Example: will, shall, may, might, can, could, must, should, would, do, does, did, have, has, had, be, am, is, are, was, were

Verb Tenses

Verbs change form to show different tenses, which indicate when an action takes place. Here are the main tenses:

  • Present Tense: Shows an action happening now.
    • Example: I run every day.
  • Past Tense: Shows an action that happened in the past.
    • Example: I ran yesterday.
  • Future Tense: Shows an action that will happen in the future.
    • Example: I will run tomorrow.
  • Present Perfect Tense: Shows an action that started in the past and continues to the present.
    • Example: I have run five miles this week.
  • Past Perfect Tense: Shows an action that was completed before another past action.
    • Example: I had run five miles before I ate breakfast.
  • Future Perfect Tense: Shows an action that will be completed by a specific time in the future.
    • Example: I will have run ten miles by the end of the month.
