English slang, collocations, idioms, and phrasal verbs, along with their synonyms or explanations.


Slang:

Slang is informal language specific to a group or context. It changes rapidly.

  • "Chill" (Slang): To relax or hang out.
    • Synonyms: Relax, unwind, take it easy, hang out, loaf, lounge
  • "Lit" (Slang): Excellent, exciting, or amazing.
    • Synonyms: Amazing, fantastic, awesome, incredible, great, superb
  • "Broke" (Slang): Having no money.
    • Synonyms: Penniless, impoverished, destitute, skint (British slang), strapped for cash
  • "FOMO" (Slang - Fear Of Missing Out): Anxiety that an exciting or interesting event may currently be happening elsewhere, often aroused by posts seen 1 on social media.
    • Explanation: Fear of missing out on social events or experiences.
  • "Salty" (Slang): Angry, bitter, or upset.
    • Synonyms: Angry, bitter, resentful, irritated, annoyed

Collocations:

Collocations are words that frequently appear together.

  • "Heavy rain": Significant rainfall.
    • Synonyms: Torrential rain, downpour, deluge
  • "Make a mistake": To commit an error.
    • Synonyms: Err, blunder, slip up, make an error
  • "Take a photo": To capture an image with a camera.
    • Synonyms: Snap a picture, take a picture, photograph
  • "Strong coffee": Coffee with a high concentration of caffeine.
    • Synonyms: Bold coffee, potent coffee
  • "Do your homework": Complete assigned schoolwork.
    • Synonyms: Complete assignments, study

Idioms:

Idioms are expressions whose meanings are not predictable from the usual meanings of their constituent elements.

  • "Hit the nail on the head": To state something exactly right.
    • Synonyms: Be spot on, be absolutely correct, get it exactly right
  • "Break a leg": Good luck (often used in theater).
    • Explanation: A way of wishing someone good luck, especially before a performance.
  • "Cost an arm and a leg": To be very expensive.
    • Synonyms: Be very costly, be exorbitant, be overpriced
  • "Let the cat out of the bag": To reveal a secret.
    • Synonyms: Spill the beans, reveal a secret, disclose information
  • "Once in a blue moon": Very rarely.

Phrasal Verbs:

Phrasal verbs are combinations of a verb and a particle (preposition or adverb) that create a new meaning.

  • "Look up": To search for information.
    • Synonyms: Search for, research, find out
  • "Put off": To postpone or delay.
    • Synonyms: Postpone, delay, reschedule, procrastinate
  • "Give up": To stop trying.
    • Synonyms: Quit, stop trying, surrender, abandon
  • "Take after": To resemble a family member.
    • Synonyms: Resemble, look like, be similar to
  • "Get along with": To have a good relationship with someone.
    • Synonyms: Get on with, have a good rapport with, be friendly with
