English slang, collocations, idioms, and phrasal verbs, along with their synonyms!


I. Slang (Informal language, often specific to a group or time period):

  • Basic/Common Slang:

    • Cool: (Adjective) Awesome, great, excellent. Synonyms: amazing, fantastic, superb
    • Chill: (Adjective/Verb) Relaxed, calm / To relax. Synonyms: laid-back, easygoing / unwind, chill out
    • Hang out: (Verb) Spend time with friends. Synonyms: socialize, get together, kick it (more slangy)
    • Dude: (Noun) A common term for a man (often used in address). Synonyms: guy, fella, mate (British)
    • Sweet: (Adjective) Good, pleasing. Synonyms: nice, delightful, lovely
    • Whew: (Exclamation) Expressing relief or exhaustion. Synonyms: phew, gosh, oh my goodness
    • Busted: (Adjective/Verb) Caught (doing something wrong) / To catch someone. Synonyms: caught red-handed, apprehended
    • Couch potato: (Noun) A person who spends a lot of time watching television. Synonyms: lounger, sluggard, inactive person
    • Cranky: (Adjective) Irritable, grumpy. Synonyms: irritable, grouchy, testy
  • More Regional/Modern Slang (Use with caution, as these can be very specific!):

    • Salty: (Adjective) Bitter, annoyed. Synonyms: irritated, resentful
    • Slay: (Verb) To do something exceptionally well. Synonyms: excel, nail it, rock it
    • Tea: (Noun) Gossip. Synonyms: dish, scoop, news
    • Lit: (Adjective) Amazing, exciting. Synonyms: awesome, incredible, wild
    • GOAT: (Noun) Greatest Of All Time. Synonyms: legend, icon, master

II. Collocations (Words that commonly go together):

  • Strong coffee: (Not "powerful coffee")
  • Heavy rain: (Not "strong rain")
  • Take a photo: (Not "make a photo")
  • Do your homework: (Not "make your homework")
  • Make a mistake: (Not "do a mistake")
  • Fast food: (Not "quick food")
  • Business trip: (Not "work trip")
  • Public transport: (Not "open transport")
  • Absolutely sure: (Not "totally sure" - both are used, but "absolutely" is a strong collocation)
  • Crystal clear: (Not "glass clear")

III. Idioms (Phrases with figurative meanings):

  • Piece of cake: Easy. Synonyms: a breeze, effortless, simple
  • Cost an arm and a leg: Very expensive. Synonyms: pricey, exorbitant, high-priced
  • Hit the nail on the head: Be exactly right. Synonyms: be spot on, be perfectly correct
  • Let the cat out of the bag: Reveal a secret. Synonyms: spill the beans, disclose, unveil
  • Break a leg: Good luck! (theatrical origin). Synonyms: best of luck, have a successful performance
  • Under the weather: Slightly ill. Synonyms: unwell, indisposed, ailing
  • Feeling blue: Sad. Synonyms: depressed, downcast, gloomy
  • In hot water: In trouble. Synonyms: in a difficult situation, in a jam
  • Once in a blue moon: Rarely. Synonyms: infrequently, seldom, hardly ever
  • Don't count your chickens before they hatch: Don't rely on something good happening until it's actually happened.

IV. Phrasal Verbs (Verbs combined with prepositions or adverbs):

  • Look up: Search for information. Synonyms: research, investigate, consult
  • Put up with: Tolerate. Synonyms: endure, bear, stand
  • Give up: Quit. Synonyms: abandon, stop, cease
  • Take after: Resemble a family member. Synonyms: resemble, look like, be similar to
  • Figure out: Understand, solve. Synonyms: comprehend, decipher, resolve
  • Go on: Continue. Synonyms: proceed, carry on, persist
  • Set up: Arrange, organize. Synonyms: establish, create, prepare
  • Break down: Stop functioning / analyze. Synonyms: malfunction, fail / examine, dissect
  • Turn down: Refuse. Synonyms: reject, decline, dismiss
  • Call off: Cancel. Synonyms: abort, rescind, withdraw
